Where Can I Get Pure Cannabis Oil?

As Vermont’s recreational cannabis market takes off, customers have become exposed to all different types of cannabis products. From flowers and edibles to tinctures and concentrates, the newly legalized landscape can be a lot to take in for novice users.

One product that has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years is cannabis oil. In fact, of all the cannabis products we offer at our dispensary in Rutland, pure cannabis oil is probably the number-one requested item.

But what exactly is cannabis oil and where can it be purchased legally? To help elevate your recreational experience, we put together this guide that covers:

What is Cannabis Oil?

Cannabis oils are extracts derived from the cannabis plant. Unprocessed oils contain the same active ingredients as cannabis plants; however, the precise balance of compounds varies from plant to plant.

Like other commercially produced cannabis products, the concentration of active substances and potency is more controlled than in unregulated settings. This makes it easier to calculate doses when using either medicinally or recreationally.

What’s the Difference Between CBD & THC Oil?

There are two main active substances in cannabis plants: cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Which substance is dominant in cannabis oil depends on the type of plant. Hemp plants have a higher CBD content while skunk plants possess more THC. To be considered hemp, cannabis plants must not produce more than 0.3% THC.

CBD oils derived from hemp plants do not produce the “high” sensation commonly associated with cannabis. On the other hand, THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the elevated experience that recreational users tend to seek.

What are the Benefits of Cannabis Oil?

While research surrounding the benefits of CBD and THC oil is still growing, there are several studies that support claims that cannabis oil can help:

  • Reduce Anxiety & Depression: A 2017 study in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry illustrated that participants who received 300 mg of CBD experienced significantly less anxiety than those who received a placebo.
  • Treat Select Epilepsy Syndromes: The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of CBD to treat seizures resulting from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome in patients two years old and older in 2018.

  • Reduce Symptoms from PTSD: Four human trials from 2012 – 2016 using combined doses of THC and CBD compounds revealed that participants experienced fewer PTSD symptoms as a result.
  • Treat Opioid Addiction Symptoms: A set of both preclinical animal and human clinical trials suggest that CBD may be effective at treating people who are dependent on opioids.
  • Relieve Severe, Unmanageable Pain: In Canada, Sativex — an oral spray comprised of THC and CBD compounds — is approved to treat severe pain in both multiple sclerosis and cancer patients.
